Board-certified in both obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Farr R. Nezhat is one of the leading gynecologic oncologists and endometriosis specialists in the world. His pioneering work in laparoscopic and robotic surgery for the treatment of gynecological cancers and complex benign conditions attracts patients from across the globe. Dr. Farr Nezhat’s expertise lies in treating ovarian, uterine, and cervical cancers. He also specializes in severe and multi-organ endometriosis, pelvic masses, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, various gynecological fistulas, and congenital anomalies. Through the establishment of a minimally invasive surgery division and fellowships at three hospitals, Dr. Farr Nezhat has provided innumerable training opportunities for fellows, residents, medical students, and national/international visiting physicians. He was one of the first to perform, publish and teach laparoscopic and robotic surgery in gynecology and oncology.

In addition to providing world-class treatment to patients, Dr. Farr Nezhat contributes prolifically to the scientific and medical literature, having authored over 200 articles and establishing himself as a leading endometriosis specialist, ovarian cancer specialist, and cervical cancer specialist. He has published four textbooks on operative laparoscopy, robotics, and hysteroscopy, one textbook on the medical and surgical management of endometriosis, and contributed more than 80 book chapters to various texts. He has presented over 300 abstracts and video presentations, earning over 20 awards throughout his career.

Dr. Farr Nezhat has organized numerous post-graduate courses that included didactic lectures, hands-on training simulations, and live surgery demonstrations. His charitable teaching endeavors have brought him across the globe, where he has performed live surgery upon invitation in many countries. Dr. Farr Nezhat believes learning, training, and collaboration are interdependent foundational components that lead to meaningful breakthroughs in patient care.

He continues to research, publish and teach in the areas of the pathophysiology of ovarian cancer, malignant transformation of endometriosis, and application of laparoscopy and robotics in gynecological malignancy, most specifically in early and advanced ovarian cancer.

Most importantly, given the significance of the malignant transformation of endometriosis and its association with ovarian cancer, Dr. Farr Nezhat’s work has benefitted countless women and their families worldwide.

Background

Early in his 30-year career as a gynecologist, Dr. Farr Nezhat focused on pioneering advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques for treating ovarian and pelvic masses, mild to extensive pelvic endometriosis, and other pelvic pathologies. His game-changing multi-disciplinary approach, which addressed endometriosis involving other pelvic organs such as the bowel, bladder, ureter, and even the diaphragm, contributed numerous surgical “firsts” to the literature, establishing evidence-based protocols for improved patient care and cementing his status among the best endometriosis specialists in the world.

One of Dr. Farr Nezhat’s chief interests was the laparoscopic management of ovarian cysts and pelvic masses. He demonstrated the ability to manage adnexal masses by laparoscope instead of by laparotomy, and this has had a profound medical and societal impact. Recognizing the potential impact of minimally invasive surgery in the treatment of gynecologic cancer, he completed a fellowship in gynecologic oncology. Subsequently, Dr. Farr Nezhat was able to refine and develop laparoscopic and robotic operative techniques for efficient, safe, and practical application to gynecological oncology.

His work resulted in several groundbreaking publications on laparoscopic and robotic management of cervical, endometrial, and especially ovarian cancer, under the mentorship of Professor Carmel Cohen, MD. During his fellowship, he developed an interest in cancer arising from endometriosis and was able to obtain funding from the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. This support led to the publication of several significant scientific articles, including “Comparative immunohistochemical studies of BCL-2 and proteins in benign and malignant ovarian endometriotic cysts, published in the journal Cancer (2002).”
